Creating a Playbook
Last updated: October 21, 2026
Playbook Builder lets you pull contracts, templates, and internal guidance documents from your Ivo repository, or upload files directly, and automatically generate a structured legal playbook that Ivo can use for AI-driven contract redlining.
To get started:
Navigate to https://app.ivo.ai/playbook and click +Create Playbook. You'll be prompted to choose a creation method:
Generate from Repository (recommended)
Generate from Uploads
Start from Scratch

Generate from Repository
Select a Room.
Select one of the following options to define your scope:
View
Contract Type
Governing Law
Industry
Our Role in Agreement
Choose a Playbook Structure:
Topic by Topic — groups topics across the documents you select, not necessarily in the order of any specific contract. Best for third-party contracts and varied document types.
Clause by Clause (new) — follows the exact structure of a model contract you select, with one position per section. Best for first-party contracts where you know exactly what your contract structure will look like. Select a model contract from the available contracts in the room.
Add additional instructions (optional). To generate your playbook in a different language, add “Generate the playbook in [language]” here.
Click Continue — your playbook will be generated automatically.

Configure Your Playbook
Once generated, you'll be asked to fill in a few details:
Set a title
Add a description (optional)
Add the parties the playbook represents
Choose a review mode
Set the playbook's visibility
Organization: Shared with the whole workspace (available to admin roles only)
Personal – Only you can see it (available to all roles)
Click Continue

You can then review your positions and add any additional ones as needed. When finished, click Save Playbook and your playbook will be ready to use.

See it in action:
Generate from Uploads
Upload up to 15 files. For each uploaded file, label it as one of the following:
Playbook — Ivo will follow the text of this document exactly, preserving all positions word for word. If you upload multiple playbooks, positions will be combined where subjects overlap. Any additional uploaded contracts will add fallback positions underneath the playbook’s original positions.
Template — used word for word as the standard position for the relevant clause. In the absence of a playbook, templates are used as the standard position, with contracts used as fallback positions.
Other — used as source material to inform and supplement positions.
Parties are auto-suggested based on your uploaded documents and can be edited.
Choose a Playbook Structure:
Topic by Topic — groups topics across all uploaded documents.
Clause by Clause — follows the structure of a model contract. If you have uploaded a playbook and selected Clause by Clause, the clause-by-clause structure will override the playbook’s original structure.
Add additional context for how you want the playbook to be built (recommended).
Click Continue — your playbook will be generated automatically.

Viewing Position Sources
After generating a playbook, you can see exactly where each position was sourced from using the Sources side view.
Click on any position in the generated playbook.
The sources panel will open on the right, showing all the documents that influenced that position.
Click on any source to see the specific snippet from that document that was used.
If a document contains multiple relevant snippets, you can navigate between them using the arrows in the top right of the sources panel.
